Long story short, Ive got a brand new big screen, good movies, good games, built in sound. The last one I'd like to fix. The problem is that I have no idea what Im doing when it comes to audio - anything.

Basically what I need is a reciever, with dolby digital surround and such, and speakers. I already have a subwoofer and a dvd player. I would prefer 5.1 surround setup, but I'd most likely just have to go with a stereo setup considering I really dont have much space since I also have my computer in the room as well.

Unfortunately, my "home theater" room isnt very big, about 7ft x 17ft, which means Ive got about a 1ft and a half on either side of the tv for speakers, so they cant be too wide. And to get even pickier, I'd really prefer to have everything silver, since it would match the tv.

I'd like to stay within the $500-$600 price range. I really just want to the best bang for my buck, and since you folks dont get commision for suggestions, I figured you're the best to ask.

Any suggestions on a decent rig?

If you are truly just interested in better sound to complement your Video setup, then for $500 to $600 I would recommend Home Theater in a Box (also known as HTiaB). The kicker for most of the HTiaB systems is that they usually incorporate a DVD player (which you already have), and often a subwoofer (which you *also* have). Furthermore, if you decide down the road that you want to upgrade a component, some HTiaBs don't play well with other components. Now if you look at separates, you start to bump up in price a bit, but also in functionality. There are a number of affordable 5.1 AV receivers from reputable manufacturers around that are available in silver for under $200 (Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, etc.). At tyhis level you typically get 5.1 Dolby (but not DTS), 80 wpc or more, video switching inputs and outputs (but not upconverting), and often an A?B feature for a second zone. The first inexpensive, decent small speakers I can think of are the Athena Micra 6 and Def Tec Pro-Cinema 60 systems, but they both run about $500 or $600; I'm sure there are other systems out there, and other voices on the list will chime in soon.

One word of advice: cost doesn't always equal quality (as evidenced by Bose and their "lifestyle products"), but frequently you'll find that features increase with cost as far as electronic components are concerned. If you don't want 6.1 or 7.1 or component upsampling don't get...besides, it'll all be cheaper next year than we paid this year.

Bryan...but speakers are more important than the receiver, IMHO...

The best bang for the buck home theater deal that I have seen, and this is just my opinion:
http://reviews.cnet.com/Onkyo_HT-S770/4505-6740_7-30903741.html

The setup is available in silver as well.

Here is a good price on it: $470 w/free shipping no tax - in silver

Currently so many manufacturers are using plastic in the HTIB systems and you just end up with sound that is cheap. This system offers actual wooden cabinets that are a lot bigger than the cheaper setups and don't hide away. But, the sound is supposed to be very good and it includes component video switching as well as DTS handling. As far as I can tell, it really meets your needs overall.

The subwoofer included may blow your current sub away, but it may just be extra. You can run both subs for that matter.

You already have a subwoofer, and need speakers under a foot wide? I'd wager to say that bookshelves, mounted on stands are about what you'll be looking for.

Ascend Acoustics has the award-winning CBM-170 2-way, 2-driver bookshelf for $328/pair. Available in metallic silver. 2-way, 3-driver CMT-340m's are $548/pair, but also available in metallic silver.

Axiom loudspeakers have 3 bookshelf models ranging from $280 to $440/pair. And they are all custom-orderable in "burnished silver".

Those are two companies that offer silver speakers anyway.....

check these out

check out these speakers ive never heard them but i have heard good things. they fit the silver and small criteria and you can get it without the sub and still have couple hundred $ for a decent receiver maybe an onkyo 60x. just my 2 cents.

well, I think Ive found a winner. Good price and really good reviews. Now Ive got one more question.

Am I going to need to buy anything special to get the most out of this system or is everything I need in the box?

Thanks again for the great suggestions.

your equipment wont perform to its full potential until you get monster cables!
lol just kidding i was just quoteing their new radioshack commercial. it will probably even have speaker cables in the box so depending on the distance you might not even need that.

You likely won't need anything, but I have not read the details on what is included in the box other than the receiver and the speakers/sub. You may need to get some interconnects to hook your DVD player, cable box, etc. up to the receiver. If all you have are $2.00 cheapie cables, then that is FINE to get you started. Don't buy something new. You do want to use the best connection possible though. Component video, digital audio whenever possible all work together to give you the best experience.

If you need some additional cabling, you will hear recommendations for Blue Jeans cable on this site, but even the bargain cables from Best Buy and Radio Shack or even Target/Wal Mart will work and keep you happy and won't be nearly the price of similar Monster Cable.

PCMall.com has the Onkyo HTS770S (the silver version) on sale for $399.99 with free shipping:

Onkyo HTS770S for $399.99 at PCMall.com

You have to put it in your shopping cart ("Buy Now!") to see the sale price.

I agree that this system is a great value and probably the best deal in HTIB right now.

I'd take a good look at the Hsu Research VT-12. I was surprised by how well the shifting the mid-bass to the center channel works. It even held up to the demanding score of the LoTR. It get good reviews, too. http://www.hsustore.com/vt12.html

Pair with the Pioneer 1014 or one of the Panasonic digital receivers and you will have nice sound at your budget.

your system will probably come with cheap speaker wires. stop by Walmart or Lowe's and get some decent 14 gage speaker wire. A 100 ft roll is less than $25.

and like BMXTRIX said, a decent set of interconnects. a set like these will do a great job for your picture from the DVD to the TV (if you have that type of input on the TV)

you will also need one of these:

and one of these:

the rest are optional.... :D

enjoy your new toys !!!
