I currently have 5.1.2 setup. My question is, if I use the wide front pre out to an amplifier, would signal just be the same as the front speakers or would it be the wide front?

Jeff,
The preouts will provide the signal as labeled. Wide front will give you wide front.

You don't mention your AVR, but some outputs on some AVRs are configurable. For example, a 7 channel amp may have the main 5 channels hardwired, and the last 2 outputs will be, "Front Height/Front Wide/Rear Surround". Within the AVR configuration you tell it which signal to send to those outputs. But you must chose between the signals listed.

It is an onkyo. I have it wired for 7.1 but can also switch to 5.1.2 for Dolby Atmos. But I was wondering if the wide front would put out a signal all the time on the pre outs?

Generally a pre-out is always live, but you'd need to confirm that for a particular unit....it might be mentioned in the manual?

Do your Rear Surrounds have any output when you play a 5.1 source? If you've selected a surround mode, the answer is yes.

Your AVR manufactures sound for the rear surrounds. It's not on the source. It is created with algorithms in your AVR to "guess" what sounds would be appropriate for the Rears. I believe your Wide Fronts would operate the same way.

Thank you for your replies.
So I hooked up a really cheap amplifier I have to see if the wide front was producing anything, and it is.
I have outputs for wide, atmos, and backs, but can only play one at a time. I was really amazed how well it sounds in wide mode. Looking forward to getting an external amp.
