I'm new here and don't understand a lot of what is said, but would like some help. I run a strictly two channel system (I just don't like all those speakers all over the room and don't want to re-model my house to install them in-wall or in-ceiling)with Dynaudio 3 way towers with a two channel Marantz integrated ampPM 8006, but it doesn't have inputs for A/V items (HDMI). All the A/V recievers I see have loads of channels. I keep thinking there must be something out there that will support both my turntable and high def TV. Also my optical cable keeps falling out of the port causing me to have to pull everything out and re-install it. Seems super flimsy - it that just the norm? Thanks for any help.
AV receivers are designed to cover as many people as possible. So, your typical 5.1 or 7.1 receiver is actually capable of playing back audio and video in setups that include your setup of a 2.0 system (2 main speakers, no subwoofer). In the settings of the receiver you just tell it that you don't have a center speaker, any surround speakers, or a subwoofer.
This is common across really inexpensive AV receivers all the way up to top of the line models.
Be aware that having a proper 'phono' input on receivers these days is becoming less and less common. So, if that's a feature you want, just look for a model which includes a phono input on it.
So a model like this will work just fine:
The Highest Resolution. This 7.2-channel, 100 Watt AV receiver boldly explores entertainment possibilities for an advanced home theater with the latest in video and audio, including Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization, DTS:X, wireless streaming and more.

There are loads more out there with similar or lower price points which will work great.
You can even go to a lower price point on the receiver if you pick up a separate phono to line level amplifier. This is your call.
