I have the above as part of my home theatre system. They are good and aside from the odd blown tweeter they have been pretty reliable. I am just curious whether there would be a noticeable improvement in sound quality if I replaced them with a more modern model, up to about $8k for the pair? I guess the question is simple.........has speaker performance improved in 20-25 years?

Yes.
Everything from Driver design to the finished product has improved.
While there may not be any reason to upgrade old gear in good working order, it isn't hard to find a better replacement now, and perhaps for less than the current buy-in on a new pair of 700 Series Towers.

That's a healthy budget and I think you'd be able to find something you like better. Take a look at Salk Sound. Those guys make some of the most accurate, neutral speakers out there and your budget has room for it.

I own speakers with RAAL ribbon tweeters and they're pretty awesome. They live up to the hype. The beryllium dome tweeters are reportedly right there as well.
