I need to replace the blown tweeter in my VR12 center channel. I called Boston Acoustics and someone there told me that the tweeter from a VR10 should work as a replacement. So I bought one off eBay and they do appear similar but the housings are different and the back of the VR12 tweeter has a heat sink that the VR10 does not.

VR12 tweeter on the left, VR10 tweeter on the right.

Backs of tweeters, again VR12 on the left, VR10 on the right.

I'm going to try calling some local stereo repair shops and see if someone can swap the VR10 tweeter into the VR12 housing. Anyone know if this is possible?

It looks like the heat sinks are holding the tweeters in place. Removing the tweeters shouldn't be a problem, it's how to get them to stay once they're swapped since you have to effectively break/melt/remove those melted plastic pieces on those four corners of the heat sinks.

There was a good shop in Saratoga, but I just looked him up and it looks like he closed.

Did you measure the actual tweeter diameter? They look pretty close. You can just use some RTV or glue to reseat the heatsinks to the same posts. The question is whether or not they actually fit.

So I called Boston back and it seems like I got incorrect information the first time. The speakers that they recommend for replacement tweeters are CR9, CR8 and CR2. Funny enough I'm using CR9's for rear surrounds. I looked at pics and the housing on those 3 speakers does indeed look like the housing in the VR12. The guy at Boston told me the tweeter isn't exactly the same but it's close enough.

I could rip the tweeter out of one of my CR9's but then I'd have one of my rear surrounds missing a tweeter. I guess it's not a huge deal since it's just a surround but I don't think I want to do that. I did find one person with a CR2 for $40 on Craigslist Detroit. I think I'll buy that one and take the tweeter out of it.

So now I guess I'll have to turn around and sell the VR10 I bought.
