Tweaking your own speakers... hmmm

Hello all... As most of you know, I own a set of Paradigm Monitor 7s. The tweaters can seem a little harsh at times. I have always had trouble with tweaters and I have found that I typically like a soft dome tweaters sound for my ears.
Is this a good idea to consider replacing these with a softdome tweater? Or is this something I would end up screwing up the matched sound?

Also, what about the crossover inside. Has anyone ever replaced the parts of those with better parts?

Just thinking out loud...

I think you'd be better off just keeping them the way they are, and selling them. That way, you can use that money towards new, better speakers that include soft domes, or ones that you like the sound of.

I just switched from soft dome to aluminum, although the soft dome speakers were low quality, I really like the new Energy's. ASAP, I will have a full set.

The crossovers in your paradigms are designed specifically for the drivers that are in them. Changing out the drivers would most likely have a very negative effect. Furthermore, the speaker itself (driver layout, etc) is designed around the drivers in use, so altering the characteristics of the tweeter would make it sound wonky.

If you like the soft dome sound, I suggest you check out the PC-Series from Phase Tech. Their PC 3.1 II speakers are like large bookshelves, but have the bass performance of many floorstanding speakers. They list at $1200/pr. The full-size floorstanding speakers, the PC 9.1s, are also awesome (I believe you've read my review) and have an MSRP of $2000/pr. The technology in the PC series is really pretty cool. The woofers are actually solid, low-density foam with a flat front.

.....EdWelly, you could sure try replacing the tweeter elements with soft dome, but the chances of fitting the existing hole for the present tweeter comes into play....you could call Madisound and talk to Jeff, I think it's Jeff as memory serves, about what you're considering....I don't know the efficiency over-all with your speakers, but Scan-Speak and Morel would be softdome tweet suggestions....an L-pad could come into play also to turn a more efficient tweet down....I applaud your thoughts....this is the kind of stuff I love to try.....

Sell 'em. :) Give the Mordaunt Short 900 series a listen. They are aluminum domes but they are nowhere near as bright as the 'digms. I'm a soft dome fan too...see my sig.

You can surround the tweeter with about 3" of felt, this may well be enough to tame them down a bit. I have used that on a few bright speakers with decent results.
