Tv speakers vs Stereo

For my room I have a stereo setup with a sub but it definitely takes up a lot of space due to the receiver and sub. Is there any way I can free up space or should I just use the built in speakers on my tv. Thanks!

You could ditch your receiver and sub, and replace your speakers with a pair of active monitors. The JBL LSR305 (sold each; change Qty to 2 before ordering) have excellent sound for the money.

If you prefer to keep your sub, you could replace your receiver with a miniDSP 2x4 with the 4way Advanced plugin while still replacing your main speakers with the JBL monitors. Beware that you'll need a PC, a calibrated measurement mic, and a lot of patience if you go this route. But it's got the potential to be the most rewarding solution.

You could go with in-wall / in-floor subwoofers, or even in-ceiling subwoofers (AH write-up) if you like.

You could replace the lot with a soundbar or speaker base (although that speaker base still needs an amplifier), or you could use a TV Stand with built-in speakers. Bear in mind that with any of these three options you won't get as big a sound stage or as good stereo separation as you (most likely) currently have.

Be that as it may, anything's better than built-in TV speakers. What sort of budget did you have in mind? What are your current speakers, receiver, and subwoofer? What are the dimensions of your room?
