TV Recommendation - 42" Rear Projection DLP? LCD?

Hi All,

Need some expert advice. Looking to get a 42" TV (good size for my room, and fits my built-in). Was at Best Buy shopping around and looked at the Sony 42" LCD rear-projection LCD, Samsung 44" DLP and a related Sharp and Toshiba models.

My big question is which TV provides the best viewing experience for TV (high def is in my future!), movies and video games (I'm not a huge sports fan)? I've read lots of pros and cons for rear projection LCD vs. DLP.

Anything else I need to consider?

Thanks!
Chris

I'm in the exact same boat as him, but I DO watch alot of sports...and play Xbox 360 and watch alot of DVD's. I look @ the same type of TV's- Sony and Panasonic.

I have the 50" version of the Sony you're looking at and it is great. There is an ongoing argument between LCD and DLP sets. DLP are supposed to have deeper blacks, but they are also prone to the "rainbow effect." For my situation, the Sony is perfect. It has an excellent picture at an excellent price. I do not think you would be disappointed.

I can see the rainbow effect on a number of DLP projectors, but for TVs, the 2nd and 3rd generation models should have controlled this pretty well, though I'd personally still pass on DLP.

well, I went from a 14 year old RCA monitor to Sony 42" last year. Considering that they're now $1000 cheaper 10 months later...I got nooooo problems advising you toward the Wegas...:) Great clear picture to me. I haven't ever second guessed my buy.

Best advice, get an lcd flat panel, specifically, Sharp Aquos. I bought a 32" widescreen over the xmas, and the picture is amazing, even with with regular old cable, the difference is amazing. I too play video gmaes, so a plasma is out of the question. Even though you 'll salesmen spout off about how new plasma's dont have burn-in, yeah yeah, you have to spend 5k to get one with a decent refresh rate. Just get an lcd panel. You won't regret it. If you can't get the flat panel, get the rear projection lcd.
