TV Optical Out help

Hi,

I currently have SkyHD and PS3 connected up via HDMI to my TV (Sont KDL-X3000).

I also have a 5.1 surround dvd/amplifier with optical input (no HDMI). Now i know i could connect my SkyHD/PS3 to my amp via optical, however i was wondering if i connected the Optical out from my TV to my Amp, would the DolbyDigital pass through the TV. Obviously that way i would have my amp playing the audio for whatever i am watching on the TV.

I also have a media player. If this is connected up to the TV via phono would the audio pass through to the amp too?

Thanks guys

Daniel

Analog and digital are two different animals.

All the TV's I've seen will only send out, via digital optical, only what it generates from it's own internal ATSC tuner. I can't recall one that will "pass thru" a digital signal from another device.

As for analog audio sources, (red/white phono plugs), it's not uncommon for a TV to pass these through to a receiver via their analog outputs.

hope this helps...

My friend has a Sony LCD TV that does pass thru audio to the optical output. We hooked up a Toshiba HD DVD player and a PS3 via HDMI to the TV. I took the optical out of the TV and ran it to the AVR and everything works fine.
