TV Damage caused by Weight of Center Chnl?

I have the following rack http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/OmniMount-Center-Channel-Speaker-Shelf-CCH1B/sem/rpsm/oid/108951/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do and a Monitor Audio silver lcr center channel (http://www.monitoraudio.co.uk/product.php?range=2&product=6). I was wondering if anyone has heard about possible damage that could occur by the weight of the speaker sitting on top of my TV (sony sxrd 60 in RPTV).

I heard a rumor about warped mirrors or screens.

Since your center is only 18 lbs, I doubt it would hurt the TV. If the front frame of the TV flexed when you put the speaker on it or if there were any signs of strain, then I'd be concerned, but I think you should be fine. I had the same concerns about my DefTech CLR3000 center channel speaker since it's 62 lbs, so I had to build a shelf w/ legs behind the TV to take most of the weight off the TV.

That's great to hear. It's something I've been concerned about lately myself. My Athena centre speaker is 18 pounds, and has been sitting on top of my new HDTV for a couple months now. I kept thinking about finding another way for fear of damaging the HDTV, but my fears are put to rest. Thanks, guys.

I have an old 50" Hitachi from the early 90's and the guy I bought it from said not to ever put anything on top of it for the same reason you mentioned about warping. I've now had the TV for about 3 yrs without issue and I've had quite a bit of stuff up there right along side my center channel that is right in the middle. I've also had a much heavier center channel up there for a while without any problems.

If it seems to creak and strain when you put it on there then don't, but otherwise I'd say it's fine.

Well, the scary thing for me is that I have heard the occasional creaking coming from my speaker/TV. At least, I think it *might* be from that, I dunno. The creaking is always brief, like a single creak, not a long creaking. And it's usually pretty soft in volume, and happens maybe a couple times a day.

I'll try to describe the pics that I've attached. I used to have a speaker mount on the wall for the centre speaker, and its height was perfect for my older, smaller TV. When the new HDTV came along, the height of the speaker mount was too low. And because of sheer laziness, I didn't take the mount out of the wall and put it higher, I stacked some wood (from an old DVD stand) on top of it, placed a couple short pieces of wood forward to rest on top of the HDTV, then placed the speaker on top of that. Is this a really bad idea? Should I think of doing something else for the centre speaker?

By the way, that little thing in the centre of the wood there is just a little lamp, to provide some illumination behind the HDTV when watching at night.

Looks like it may work but I would guess that you either are not married or your wife is really nice because that is one ugly bracket holding your center...lol...

For the record, the brackets are only the two L-shaped things attached to the wall. All the other things are pieces of wood stacked on top of it. It IS pretty ugly, I absolutely agree, but since nobody ever goes back there, I haven't been terribly worried about it.

So that weight on the TV will be okay? It's only been there for a couple months . . .

I am just giving you a hard time. I am trying to figure a good place for my center but cant seem to find a TV stand that will hold it. I like how Warp put his plasma on his center but my plasma had the dreaded duck-feet so it wont work for me.

You could easily build a nice shelf from your wall to hold your center; I was going to do that but the wife said no. I going to show her your set-up just to watch her freak out (lol)

At one time, I did have it covered with a black piece of cardboard, but since it wasn't large enough to cover the whole thing, it looked pretty ridiculous. I suppose someday I'll figure something out to make the whole thing look a bit more pretty. In the meantime, I guess I'll have to accept that it's my lot in life to be the guy who makes audioholics tell their wives, "At least I'm not doing it like THIS guy!"

I've had a Rocket RSC200 (46lbs) sitting on top of my Hitachi 57S700 RPTV for a couple years and it hasn't been a problem. This TV is a large CRT-based RPTV with a sizeable top 'shelf' to hold the speaker. I wouldn't put the RSC200 on top of a thinner LCD/DLP/LCOS-based RPTV.

There are some metal center-channel shelves meant for use with DLP/LCD/LCOS RPTVs -- they have two adjustable metal legs that rest on the slanted back of the TV and the front of the shelf rests on the top front bezel of the TV. But even these aren't intended to hold a 40+ lbs center channel!
