hey i have a pretty dumb question but i was wondering how i would hook my tv up to my receiver (to get the sound from my cerwin vega speakers). my tv doesnt have any outputs, only inputs. my receiver is an onkyo tx-sr601. would i have to use a vcr connected to the receiver and then the tv connected to the vcr? or is there any way i could use a dvd player instead of a vcr? this is the only thing that i'm really confused on and any help would be appreciated. thanks a lot.

You want, like your local NBC audio on your good speakers?

Yes, the VCR is the way to do it if your TV doesn't include audio output. If it has a headphone jack, that can work as well, but the VCR is a more common way. The MOST common way to do this is using a cable box from your cable company as they will also provide you with digital cable channels and perhaps HD if your TV accepts that.

But, not going that route, use your VCR and hook the red and white audio wires up from it to your receiver. Your DVD player probably doesn't decode cable channels, so you can't use it that way. If it is a DVD recorder, then it likely DOES have a cable tuner built in. The key is, you need something with audio outputs that tunes cable channels.

I am afraid you will have to use a VCR so you can select the channel you want to sound to go to your speakers. The VCR must have audio outs, that goes to the receiver. You cannot select channels on a DVD player; you are out of luck there.

.....you make that sound like a last cigarette before the firing-squad....this is the preferred method by many with an S-VHS VCR choosing cable channels, and the TV used as a monitor on channel 3....is there a better way to get TV sound to your system?.....

alright, thanks. sucks though, i wasnt really planning on buying a vcr but i can probly find one for mad cheap. what about the vcr/dvd player combos? are there any for a reasonable price that i can hook my tv up to? my cable company charges extra if we have extra digital cable boxes hooked up and plus i never really watch the digital channels anyways, only 3-87 or whatever mine goes up to.

I think you may have missed both of our posts then:D

He asked if a VCR or DVD can do the trick since his TV doesn't have audio outs. What else would I tell him that there may be another option out there that I don't know about:rolleyes:

And now, he has to buy a VCR:confused: I thought everyone on the planet had one:D

Maybe it's time to retire your old TV and get a new one. CRT TVs are pretty cheap these days.

....I see, Mtry, and agree....right after the cable box you can rent from the RICH cable service choice, you have to have something with a tuner section that has line-level rca audio outputs....that groupage would include a descrambler being before the S-VHS VCR, by the way, inline, using 75 ohm coax....really now, guys, I've heard that just might work......

.....edit.....honest question....what other component has a tuning section for cable TV besides a VCR?....do any DVD recorders have a tuner section?.....

I like your agreement:D

I am not aware of a DVD player with a TV tuner in it; no need for it. Now a hard drive recorder for TV programs would but that is more $$ than a VCR and he may not intend to record, who know. And yes, it is a good question he posted. All questions are good to somebody:)
