Haloeb is right. A CD player has an output of 1 to 2 volts full modulation. A turntable around 3 milli volts. Also LPs were cut to the RIAA equalization curve which has to be corrected on playing the disc by the phono stage amplifier, otherwise the sound is a s you state "thin".

I would recommend the Goldring or NAD. I would go with the Goldring, they have made fine cartridges for years, and in the heyday, made fine turntables.
