Turntable into Denon AMP

Gday there,

Im having a bit of a problem setting up my amp to run with my old turntable. (old school ..... I know...I know...)

The amp is a Denon PMA255-UK and the turntable is a Mitsubishi DP200. The amp works great with the CD player and the tuner, but with the turntable it has to be turned up all the way to get a signal out of it, and even then the tone is thin and weak.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

If your amp does not have an input labeled "phono" you'll need to buy an external phono preamp. You cannot simply plug a turntable into any input, The signal level is much much lower than that of a cd player, along with needing to be boosted more, the turntables output also needs to be equalized.

Here is a good example of an external phono preamp. This particular model runs about 100 bucks.

Haloeb is right. A CD player has an output of 1 to 2 volts full modulation. A turntable around 3 milli volts. Also LPs were cut to the RIAA equalization curve which has to be corrected on playing the disc by the phono stage amplifier, otherwise the sound is a s you state "thin".

Here is what I have found available in the UK.

I would recommend the Goldring or NAD. I would go with the Goldring, they have made fine cartridges for years, and in the heyday, made fine turntables.

Here is what is available in the US, but I'm assuming you are in the UK.

These guys have you all set. I just wanted to chip in that there's a number of places from which you can buy/order those phono preamps. Amazon (both U.S. and U.K.) has them, too.

Nice! thx TLS! I didn't know about the RIAA eq curve. that explains alot. way diff. sound than my CDP for sure. I appreciate the informative post! :D
