rgriffin25 - I figured out half of it.

I'm looking for a simple start, want to pull in ota digital. I've found plenty of good info on antennaes, but limited on HDTV tuners (not cable/satellite tuners). What I have found seems to be $200 - 300 range. Could I put that towards an av receiver? My real question is: do av receivers have tuners built in? An audio receiver by definition contains a tuner, but my reading of reviews leaves me uncertain whether the same holds true w/ av receivers.

Thanks.

It sounds like you are talking about a tv tuner (atsc for HDTV). An audio receiver, whether audio only or a/v, does not contain such a tuner. The tuner in a receiver is a radio tuner (am/fm/xm).

Thanks, that's very concise.

So, antenna -> ATSC tuner -> HD-ready TV gives me video and some sound; av receiver and speakers starts making it a home theater?
