I'm planning on purchasing either the 42 or 47" WH 1080p tv. I want to use it as a tv and all I have is basic cable. I've read I need to buy a tuner seperate from the tv to veiw any cable signal. What tuner do you suggest buying?

Does basic cable not come with a box anymore?

I'm kinda in the same boat.. I'm about to pull the trigger on the 47" Westy. Although I don't watch much broadcast TV, having the option would be nice.

Odds are you're gpnna have to rent a cable box.

A QAM (digital cable) tuner only works with non-scrambled (or non-encrypted) signals and most encrypt most signals. Depending on your provider, you may need more than basic cable to avail yourself of the goodies available.

Our local Comcast here does encrypt most signals but at least we don't have to upgrade service for some rudimentary HD shows. But we DO have to use their "HD" cable box.

This post may answer a few questions. http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26866

FWIW I have Comcast digital cable with the HD box going into the plasma. I also have a 15" Samsung LCD TV with no STB box next to my computer and it is connected directly to the wall outlet. I get all the SD channels on the Samsung. This is in Eastern Mass.

I called my cable provider today (RCN) and asked what I can do. They offer a cable box for 9.95 a month which will work and offers a couple of hd channels. They informed me that almost none of thier channels are scrambled, because of this they also suggested I could use a VCR. Run the Coax to the VCR, then run either yellow/red/white or component to tv and use the vcr to change the channels. If you get a TV which will allow you to change channels but has no coax in they suggested an RF Modulator but I don't think the Westinghouse monitors can even change channels. I hope this helps.

My next question is, is there a DVD player out that can change channels :) I have a vcr at home which would work but it's old and I'm afraid even the basic cable signal would suffer.

if you buy a dvd recorder it will have a tuner in it so you could use that for your tuner

Any suggestions on what HDMI cable I should buy to connect my PS3 to this TV?

Thanks :)

Any HDMI cable should do. I'd head to Monoprice and see what kind of deals you can strum up. Better than paying whatever Monster's charging.. *shudders*
