tuner for NTSC and ATSC?

I want to add over-the-air HDTV to my projection system and have been looking into the stand-alone HD tuners. I'd also like to ditch my old VCR that I'm currently using only as a tuner for regular (analog) TV via basic cable. I hope to find a current HD tuner that can handle both NTSC and ATSC, but haven't been able to. However, some tuners say you can "view" standard def through them (I assume using signals received via the same antenna, not separate inputs or tuners?), like the Samsung DBTH260F. I'm not sure if that means it'll do what I'm looking for. Anyone know of a single device that is compatible with both regular cable and broadcast HD? Or is it possible to use some sort of switch or splitter or whatever?

Cheers,

Kevin

There are plenty of 8VSB (OTA) tuners, but only two QAM (cable) equipped tuners. One you already mentioned which is in short supply and this one;

http://epvision.com/

This being their 2nd generation model, it doesn't support SD monitors, only HD. There are no composite or S-video outs (as the 1st model did have). It does have a NTSC tuner though (which the 1st model didn't have).

Feel free to figure out the logic here. :rolleyes:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't QAM just for digital cable, not basic (analog) cable? In any case, it looks like the one you mention has all three:QAM, ATSC, and NTSC for only $149. Almost sounds too good to be true. Do you have any experience with that? I know some of the older model ATSC tuners didn't do nearly as good a job pulling in signals as the newer generation.

Thanks for the recommendation. The only drawback seems to be a manual switch on the backside (!) to change output resolutions, with no control via remote control. Not so great considering the various HD resolutions being used.

Correct.

I had their 1st generation model; the PHD-101. As far as performance, there was NO issue. Good or better than the four other digital tuners I have/had.

You set that for your display, not for the incomming signal. It's set once.
