On St. Paddy's Day a buddy I've known since childhood asked for my advice on choosing a new receiver because his current one "sounds bad". I mentioned the problem may be speakers or wiring problem. I do not yet know exactly what gear he currently has. Need to take a drive to his house and see. Probably older stuff without HDMI, etc. He is not interested in "wires all over the place" so I think than means no surround sound needed. I suggested a soundbar. He likes to listen to Books on CD (bad eyesight I guess) and he mentioned CD player maybe on the fritz too. I've got to look at his gear and see what's up. No idea how much he want's to spend. He has a big screen TV (unknown make), blu-ray player. Probably wants something simple, that's why I suggested a sound bar. I don't want to steer him wrong, if he needs a new receiver I mentioned "The Big Three (Marantz, Denon, Yamaha) hopefully they or other good one has a solution.

Can't really suggest much without knowing his current setup or some kind of budget.

We'll be waiting for your recon. I would suggest worst case scenario, a 3.1 if he doesn't want wires, although there are a variety of ways to deal with that. I'm really curious as to what he means by sounds bad. I'd be surprised if that actually turns out to be the avr but ya never know.
