Trying to get Atmos w/o 4k or 8k video

I upgrade my Yamaha RX-A1040 to a RX-A2080 so I could have Dolby Atmos. However, now I find out that there is very little Atmos content for 1080P systems. It seems to get Dolby Atmos I need a 4K Blu-ray player. Since my 1080P projector is only about 2 years old I'm not about to replace it. So I was wondering, can I buy a 4k Blu-ray player and play the disc's on my 1080P system and get the benefits of Dolby Atmos sound? Is it worth it until I finally upgrade the projector to 4K or 8K? Will the Blu-ray player play nice with the 1080P projector? Thanks in advance for your responses.

I do exactly this same thing. I still have a 1080p display as well. BD and UHD works fine with Atmos content. Where I have a problem is streaming. Atmos is only supported so many places, and in some cases you need a 4K display or it won’t work. Like Netflix and Vudu. I have seen a box that you can use to tell the streamer that the display is 4k but I can’t think of it off hand. If you don’t mind buying disks I say go for it, and get a player. Imo. It’s better than streaming anyway.

I have a 1080p PJ too and have no issues playing 4k content on it. It just gets downscaled to 1080p and an HDR to SDR conversion happens. No issues with Atmos or any other object based audio.
