Trying to decide best sub for ENERGY system

Hello there… I have been reading a lot of posts lately trying to decide on new speakers to go with my Marantx 5002. My listening area is aprox 12X16 hardwood floors and high ceiling. Usage is 90% HT, 5% radio/Music & 5% Wii. I am currently using some older “bookshelf” speakers with a passive sub.
I am planning on getting the Energy 5 speaker system. I would like to get a sub for under $300 since I plan on having more then one sub eventually!! My question is the sub! Should I get the Energy C-300 5.1 which includes the ESW8 and add another sub later or get one of the following:

Polk Audio PSW10 @ $130
Velodyne VX-10 @ $140
Polk Audio PSW505 @ $250
BIC Acoustech H100 @ $280
HSU STF-1 @ $299

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated..

Forget about any of those Polk subs, they aren't worth crap... Go with either the BIC or the HSU.

Hsu is a good sub, I personally wouldn't get any ot the others you have listed. However you have good medium size room and the Hsu STF-1 is more for a small room.

In your price range there is a less expensive sub that is very good. And for just a little over $300 you can get two and two would sound very good in your room.

The sub is a Dayton SUB-120 HT Subwoofer and the cost is $155.23 each get TWO.

Any idea how they would work with the ENERGY system?? Also am looking at BIC PA120 @ $229.

As for the POLKS I kinda feel as GlocksRock does, but I had to ask!

Thanx for the input,

What is your limit on spending for your sub? That would be the best way to direct you towards the best sub for your money.

I would like to go less than $200 for now. Get a better second sub later. Thats why I am considering the ENERGY ESW8 for now.

at that price, the dayton is a real bang for the buck as long as it can muster up a reasonable volume. do you think this might be one of the better 'get me by for awhile subs'?

Those 8inch subwoofers won't cut it in a 16x12 room. I had an E:XL-S8 in my room which is also 16x12 and it was disappointing. I now have 2-12s. Do what Midcow recommended.

Wanting more sub

What is your limit on spending for your sub? That would be the best way to direct you towards the best sub for your money.
I decided on the Energy 5.0 but still looking for the SUB!

The more I look the more sub I am wanting! Now I am looking at getting 2 of the PA120's or since the Outlaw sale; one Outlaw LFM-1EX... I looked at the Dayton but I am thinking the LFM-1EX'S lower end may be worth the extra for HT. Maybe something else who knows? Looks like my price point is around $500. Any suggestions?

Thanx again,
jp

My vote is for the Outlaw LFM-1EX or the Outlaw LFM-1. For the money (including shipping) all the subs you listed couldn't touch these. In Nov '08 I narrowed my decision down to the SVS PB12-NSD, HSU VTF-2 MK3, and the Outlaw LFM-1. I listened to the PB12, went on reputation for the HSU, a friend bought an Outlaw pre amp so I looked at their subs. I ended up buying the EX, you won't go wrong. If you can't scrape together the extra money for the EX then the LFM-1 is a great choice.

I have owned the Hsu VTF-3 MK III and now own dual Outlaw LFM-1 PLuses. I can tell you that the Plus is not that far behind the 3.3 in terms of performance. Sure, down deep the 3.3 moved more air thanks to it having dual 4" ports as opposed to the dual 3" ports on the Plus. The op could not go wrong either way imho.

Phil

You may want to check out my Pluses that are for sale in the "Classifieds" section. Hence, I will take $400 shipped for one or $800 shipped for both and include the Grammas. I have NOT even taken the paper off of the tops of them. Thus, both are in pristine condition and I have not had them much over 7-8 months. Just thought I would mention it.

Cheers,

Phil

PS: Did I mention that if you buy both I will throw in a Radio Shack SPL Meter and a Rives Test CD II calibration cd? ;);)

The Dayton 10 inch fills my room with a very low gain used. I am certain that a 12inch corner loaded and properly calibrated would generate enough SPL for your room. Especially 2 of them.

I suggest you check ebay. The 12 inch subs usually got for around 100 each.

I am looking on ebay... However I have come across a local with a Cerwin-Vega 15" (AS-30005) for sale at a good price. Anyone know if it would be worth checking out? I know it is an older sub.. But I am just wanting something for the HT.

Thanx in advance,
jp
