I just bought a yamaha RX-V1700 receiver and I have a question about TrueHD code. My receiver does not have that, also it does not have the HDMI version 1.3 capabilities. Did I screw my self over for not buying a newer receiver or am I OK? Am I going to be able to use this receiver for this new codes or do I new to upgrade? I really like it and it was at a great price and yes it was purchased at BB. I know that is not the best place to buy equipment, but after some long research from my part I foind that receiver received very good reviews.

As long as you get a BD player that can decode TrueHD and DTS-HD/MA internally you wont have a problem. Something like the Samsung 1400, Panasonic BD-10 or the new BD-50, or even a PS3 would work fine. Are you buying a new BD player anytime soon?

As long as the player can decode the new formats, this receiver will play them over HDMI. You just need to send it the PCM format, not the bitstream format. There should be no difference in terms of sound quality regardless of whether the player or receiver does the decoding. In fact, more features are available if you do the decoding in the player. Long and short, your fine with that receiver so long as the player you buy has a built in decoder.

Also the new BD-50 will apparently be BD 2.0 compatible as well as have 7.1 analog outputs. Looks like it will be the player to beat.

Thank you for your help. I'm not buying a BD player anytime soon because the funds are going to be used on a new TV. I just wanted to make sure that my receiver did not need to be upgraded. What about my DVR from Directv? Do I need to upgrade?

Well is it an HD-DVR? Do you want HD when you get your new TV? If you do just hook up the HD-DVR with either component and optical or hdmi to TV and optical to receiver.

Yes, if you want HD and your DVR is not an HD model. You will need to upgrade the antenna as well. This has nothing to do with the Yamaha receiver, however.

How many LNB's does you current directv dish have? If you have 3 or 4 you can get HD channels, anything less you have to upgrade. If you currently have regular DVR odds are you have a 3 LNB dish and won't need a new one.
