Im building a new rig with mostly gaming and listening to music in mind. I absolutely loath the tinny spin that both my soundblaster xfi platinum, and on motherboard realtek "hd" audio board in my current rig put on everything. now with a crossfirr setup, ill just have the one hdmi going from one of the video cards to my preamp? Any special considerations? Will these video cards finally let me do true passt hr u to be decoded by my preamp?

Am thinking of doing i7 2600k clocked to 5.0 to 5.2 ghz on a nice air cooler, 16 gb ram, 240 gb ssd, 4 x 3tb hard drives for ample bros flac storage and 16 gb ram. With those gpus and that aggressive clock on the cpu, any suggestions on a good blu ray player/burner that can keep up with the rest of the pc?

What you might consider is doing what I did... If your looking for 2 channel output for stereo listening.... sorry you weren't incredibly clear with what your looking to do....

Anywho... I bought an HDMI de-embedder, which will strip multichannel or just 2 channel from an HDMI signal - has an HDMI in and out and optical or analog out for you to grab audio from....

In my case for my new Salk SoundScape M7's + 18" LMS sub, I pulled a sweet 2 channel scenario with the utmost in SQ. With this unit - ATLONA 570, I can grab optical out keeping the signal digital and then send it into a DAC of choice, then send it into one of the least expensive 2 channel HT bypass preamps. The Parasound 2100 - can be had for $526.00, out to the external amp then to the speakers....

OMG - wide deep 3d soundstage....

just an FYI

I just want my marantz preamp to get clean source sound, however many channels it is, to decode rather than be decoded and colored by the pc's soundcard before it gets spit out the optical output ... Does that make sense?

Also that brings me to what I think is kind of a stupid question... How can I use a headset for playing games etc.. if I'm using the video cards onboard HDMI passthru? I don't know what I would plug it into.

Do people still use their mobos sound card for this ?

I used to just use the headphone jack on my receiver but I ended up buying a cheap behringer uca202 for my headphones just so I wouldn't have to have the receiver on :)

I still want all of the games sound effects playing through the big speakers... but would like battlechatter on a little ear piece and microphone... how to accomplish this.

An optical audio output from the motherboard will pass the exact same audio data as your video card will over HDMI, with the exception that HDMI can support TrueHD/DTS-HD and 7.1 PCM.

I don't think that would be possible to split them unless you are using an external chat program like ventrilo or whatever. Set vent to your onboard sound and use the earpiece + mic, and set everything else to use the audio out from the video card.
