Troubleshoot Subwoofer - Education

I just inherited an old Def Tech Powerfield 15 subwoofer that doesn't work. I really have no need for it but given my audio habit, I couldn't pass up a free offer. Maybe it'll become a garage sub or something...anyways

I turned it on, amp powers up which is a good sign. If I have anything connected to the RCA jacks the subwoofer is constantly humming and won't play a signal, just humming. I pulled the driver out, and connected another driver I had and I still had humming...so something is up with the signal path and/or RCA inputs.

Any ideas on next steps? How to troubleshoot internal (to the amp) feedback issues maybe?

One other thing. With nothing connected to the subwoofer, when powered on or off there is a pop coming from the driver. Any solutions out there for 'popping'?

Thanks

Most sub plate amps have switching power supplies like computers. When they fail, you get exactly what you are experiencing. I can tell you they are hard to troubleshoot, at least they are for me.

I would cut your losses and install another plate amp.

I think the Dr. is on the right path here. Any issues I have had that are similar to yours have required the amplifier to be replaced :( (experienced twice with a Velodyne HGS-10). These are definitely not easy to troubleshoot, even for a lot of techs.

Well since it sounds like a pretty serious problem I gave it to my EE bro in law and he was excited to take it and see if he can figure it out...that stuff is way over my head.

Project is over.

Thanks for saving mine and yours time.
