Trouble with STB audio

So I just bought a Toshiba 50hm66 DLP and got hd through my cable provider via set top box. I am having a problem with the Dolby Digital signal though. First off, I have the box connected to my TV via HDMI. Then, I have the TV connected to my Sony receiver (ht-ddw670 theater in a box) with an optical audio cable. With this set up, my receiver keeps telling me "pcm 48" and converts the signal to 2 channel. I tried messing with the settings on my TV and in the cable box to no avail. So, I connect the STB audio directly to the receiver with the optical cable, and all the DD works perfectly. So, obviously the TV is doing something to the signal and causing the receiver to not recognize the digital signal. I have the TV's optical audio setting set to dolby digital. Any help would be much appreciated. BTW I used the search function, but PCM yields about a million results.

I could be wrong, but I think you're going about it bass ackwards.

AFICT, TV's aren't made to output HDMI audio. They take in HDMI video.

That toslink output on the TV exists to pass any digital material from the TV stations that have it to your receiver, not audio from HDMI. Think OTA digital and HD and possibly digital cable.

HDMI, in conjunction with receivers, works best (when it works) when it's fed from the source to the receiver so it can process the sound. From there, the receiver passes the video to the monitor.

It sounds like the way you currently have it connected is the correct way. HDMI direct to the TV and digital audio directly to the receiver.
