Trouble with my Marantz 5000

Hello All,

I'm new to this site and not well versed when it comes to AV product so I thought I'd ask for some help. I've had my receiver (Marantz 5000) for years now and never had problems until today. I can't figure out how to clear the "Protect" message, I'm guessing that I shorted our the receiver somehow when I tried to connect to my ceiling speakers through a wall jack that has two sets of speakers bridged together; it may have been done incorrectly by the contractor because they were not working previously. There are no authorized Marantz service centers so I am open to any suggestion. I've already unplugged for several hours, reset, but nothing seems to work. Also, does anyone know if a set of speakers that are bridged together cause the receiver to short out like that? Or do you think that the speaker wires are incorrectly bridged/spliced?

Do you not live in North America? There is one service center in the US... Here is the reality of it though: if you can't get the unit reset with some kind of factory default reset, then sending it in for service will likely cost you as much or more than just getting a newer model or another used 5000.

It does sound like the wiring is shorted somewhere because the 5000 is pretty solid - I ran mine with three 4 Ohm speakers up front for about a year without issue or overheating.

You don't "bridge" speakers, you wire them either in parallel or series. To properly use multiple speakers with a single amp, you need some kind of impedance matching device, and for two pairs that would likely be best handled with a IM volume control for each.

Yeah, I would definitely check those speakers and the wiring. Stupid contractor.

Disconnect all speakers and see if you still get the message. If not, start adding speakers 1 by 1.
