Trouble deciding on receiver.

Okay, I have posed this question before, when I was simply dreaming of buying a new receiver to replace my Panasonic SA-HE100. The day is drawing near, however, when I will actually be able to buy one.

The problem is, I can't decide whether I should spend the extra money on the higher level model. The models in question are the yamaha HTR-5860 ($325), and the Yamaha RX-V2500 ($580). There has certainly been a lot of talk about these receivers on this forum, more so about the 2500. In your opinion, is it worth spending the extra money on the 2500? My speakers are efficient DIY's except for the center, a 4 OHM Advent.

Depending on the quality of the speakers. How did you engineer them, are they in appropriate boxes, etc. Normally for a DIY job unless you have gone to the trouble and money to buy very high quality drivers or Drivers from companies such as Wharfedale, Jamo, Klipsch then a high amp may not be in order, nor required.

Also depends on the amount of features you want, as said previously before 70% of your sound is speaker dependent. So i would probebly go with something a little cheaper, of course depending on the build quality of your DIY speakers.

i have the 5860, and i think it's a pretty capable entry level receiver. the features are pretty good for the price, and the setup is fairly intuitive. the only drawback is that, like most all A/V receivers in this price range, the 2-channel SQ really sucks. i pre-out the mains to a separate amp, and then it sounds great. but without doing that, it's nearly impossible to listen to. just to give you a heads up that if you go that route, you will need another amp or receiver for acceptable 2-channel sound.

however, if you don't have anything to pre-out it to and would have to buy something, it might be more cost effective to just get the 2500. i've never heard the 2500, though, so you might end up in the same situation of having to add a separate amp or rcvr, and then you'd have ended up spending a -lot- more. for my money and the features i was happy with, it was better to just get the less expensive option and then add a decent amp. with it set up that way, i have no real complaints.

Those two receivers arent even in the same class. The 5860 is a respectable entry level receiver, but the 2500 is by no means entry level. It's an older model selling at a discounted price since it's replacement(the 2600) has hit the streets. If you're interested in owning the receiver that many argued was one of the best in class in the $1,000 price range as little as 1 year ago, then it would make a good steal for you.

Refurbished Yamaha

Consider a refurbished Yamaha RX-V1500 or 2500 from ubid as a good price / performance compromise. They are in the $4-450 range and several forum members have had good luck with them.

I know all about that and have been researching for months. I would definetly like to get the 2500 but I'm not sure if I will have the cash for it.
