I've been using TrippLite UPS systems satisfactorily for several years now to protect delicate computer and audio equipment from power surges (large and small) and to give me time to shut down in case of a power outage. They come in many configurations; mine is the Omni VS1000 which I bought at Costco. After several years I had to replace the batteries and once replace the unit. The unit takes the power hits instead of my audio and computer equipment, so I don't mind replacing it. It's cheaper.

I use APC smart-ups throughout my house. Everything has a battery backup on it... I bought all of mine through ebay, since you can get a better deal there. I have two 1400va's, many 1250va's and many 900va's. Been doing this for years... All my equipment is protected from any lightning storm and or sag which does damage as well...
