Trends Audio TA-10 vs. Panasonic SA-XR55 Receiver

In the near future, I will probably be purchasing the Onix x-ls bookshelf speakers (87db) and need an amplifier or receiver to power them. It looks like these two are both well received, so I would like to know which one is better in terms of sound-quality.

I don't plan to add a subwoofer or go surround any time soon. I will be using my PC to connect these (AV-710 sound card likely).

The TA-10 is over $100 cheaper, but how would it compare to a ~$200 receiver like the SA-XR55?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I believe the SA-XR55 has been replaced by the SA-XR57...not sure if the 55's are still available...ordered my XR57 the other day...will let you know how she works when I get it. Keith

The XR55 are still available through some retailers; many people have said that the 57 has no real benefit over the 55 other than HDMI support.

I guess if someone can compare any Tripath amplifier to the receiver, that'd be good for my decision.

If it helps, here are the specs on the TA-10. Will anyone be able to conjecture whether it can power 87db speakers?

I dunno, I do know that the Panny has plenty of power. To tell you the truth, I hadn't heard of the TA-10 before your thread. The Panny is a sure bet in my mind as there are plenty of people using them with the X-LS.

I actually just heard of it from a headphone forum I frequent, and read some reviews for it on 6moons and TNT-audio. It's a newer amplifier from what I understand.

Their website says, "Yet, its power efficiency and physical size is just like Class-D amplifiers. Even it's maximum output power is only 2x15W, TA-10 is actually powerful to push even the floor-stand speakers with sufficient and good control of bass sound."

I have heard both, unfortunately not in the same exact system. I didn't like the panasonic, not very musical at all. The TA-10 was pretty good, but the speakers were in the mid 90dB. I'm sure it would work with your speaker, but probably only in a small room at a low volume.
