i happen to be listening to a wonderful setup today at a store that a friend of the family owns. i played the speaker wire game, and actually felt like i lost after switching out random speakers cables with lower costing ones..i felt like i lost the snake oil challenge...what is up with that, can anyone explain it

the equipment was pretty good though:

boulder preamp
boulder dac- reference transport
boulder stereo amp
B&W speakers
B&W sub

also using

levinson preamp
levinson dac- transport
levinson mono block amps
revel ultima studio's
revel sub

I changed out the cables using the following:

Nordost Val halla
Transparent reference
Blue jeans
Monster cable
Tributaries

and let me tell you what: the transparent reference cables made a significant difference in listening, no matter what cd i was listening to. how does that explain what i thought would have been snake oil from the sales guys

So, it wasn't a double blind comparison then?
Did you by chance check to see if that cable alters volume? Perhaps, as suggested, it does alter the frequency response somehow. Ask the company for that spec. What gauge is it?
Looking at their web site, it does look like a snake peddler though.
