Trading in Universal player for separate dvd / cd players?

Just wondering opinions really. I love trying out new equipment. And to that end, lately I've been thinking about getting rid of my current universal player (Marantz DV7600) to get a dedicated DVD player and CD player. I'm considering getting an Oppo DV-980H for dvd duties, and then perhaps a NAD (C542/C525BEE) or a Marantz (CD5001). Something like that...looking at cost. I'd love to stay around the $500/$600 range total.

I guess I'm just wondering if this seems downright silly. I know the DV7600 is a great player...I just get antsy and love trying out new things. And I've never had separate DVD/CD players, so this seemed like a new thing to try out. But does this seem like taking a step back? I know the Oppo players get high marks, as does the NAD (haven't heard/read much about the Marantz cd player), but not sure if they'd be second fiddle to the 7600.

you already have a dvd player,and i dont think the oppo would be an upgrade to the one you have except maybe the upconversion of the oppo.Why not just get a cd player if what you want is a sepereate cd player..

Yes, I think it would be silly but if you want to do it just to experiment and because you love trying new things then go for it...no harm done.

i say, use the existing universal player as a DVD player and then buy a dedicated CD player. if you plan to keep your rotel 1056, I would recommend looking at the rotel cd players for a matching look.

Okay, well, I had never considered keeping the marantz and just adding a cd player. There's a thought. But, I guess that's a more expensive way...i'm pretty price-conscious. See, I was going to use the sale of the 7600 to help fund the purchase of these two. No sale means money out of pocket...well, a bit more anyway. But, yeah, I guess that probably makes the most sense. Sometimes the urge to have new/different stuff just gets the best of me. I swear this hobby is an addiction.

Better yet, keep the Marantz, use the digital for the Cd and forget anything new. Just waste of good $$$, especially as the economy is going into the toilet.
But, if that itch is insatiable, upgrade everything.

are you still planning on getting the marantz sr8002? If you are maybe its best to wait till you have the receiver then decide.

Yeah, I am still looking at the 8002...just haven't jumped yet. Still debating. And, to be honest, looking for a good deal. A used one, or a refurb or something. At it's msrp, it's a bit out of my range. I'm hoping though.

I think it would be a total waste of money. Marantz makes fine stuff, so unless there is something really special you need that it can't do, you might as well just flush your money down the toilet as buy something else. And unless you are very careful in what you bought, you could very easily end up with lessor equipment as well as having less money.

It would probably be better to spend the money on therapy in an attempt at ridding yourself of the disease sometimes called "upgradeitis". Probably, it will not cure you, but if you can't stand having money on your hands, this is another way you can get rid of it. Otherwise, spend your money on more CDs, as mtrycrafts suggests.

I gotta agree with everypne else on this. Keep your Marantz. It's a nice player more likely overall better quality than what you'll get. What you could do is wait til you get a BD player and use that for upconverted dvd's and BD, then keep your Marantz as a dedicated cd player. That's what I did with my Denon 2910 when I got a PS3 for a BD player and I've been happy with the decision.

Of course if it is a jump in picture quality you are looking for then Blu-ray should be on your mind... For SD DVD viewing though, I agree with the others, the Oppo isn't going to be a night and day improvement over what you have.

Just curious here, but is there a point to having a dedicated CD player? Could you not just use the PS3 to play everything? How well does the PS3 do at playing CD's? I believe there's a way to get the PS3 to play SACD'S as well.

Sometimes I take a break when playing a game and listen to music while I'm making lunch or something. I prefer to leave the game in the ps3 (which will play music and sacd) and put something in my old dvd player (now a cd player).

I don't know if it's still relevant, at some point there were issues about universal players not having the sound quality of a dedicated cd player. But to answer your question, I think most people could get along without a dedicated cd player these days. In my case I already had a nice universal player, Denon 2910, and didnt' see any point in tossing it in a closet if I could use it for something.
