tracking downconverter power amplifier tech...

Does anybody really know what this is, does, or how it works? I have always been abit skeptical of some of Bob Carver's claims, but how do you get 400 watts into 7 channels (all channels driven per their claim) in an amp that weighs 40lbs?

Just curious.

There were some threads at AVS regarding his new amps and the technology. It's basically (I am no engineer so keep that in mind) alot more effiecent than traditional amps because the power supply produces roughly only 8% more than needed at any given time and this in turn reduces the need for pounds of heat sinks. It uses a analog ouput with a digitaly controlled power supply which in my opinion yields the best of both worlds. Highly efficent due to the tracking power supply and great sound due to analog outputs. Do a search over at AVS and I'm sure you'll get a much better explanation.

It has to be a version of Class D amplification.

I am currently an owner of the Cinema Grand 7 Signature (400w x 7). I am very happy with the results. I am currently using it to drive 2- Magnepan MG 1.6's (Fronts), 2-Magnepan MG12's (Surrounds), and 1-Magnepan CC3. Even at high db's the amp sounds fantastic driving Maggies and remains cool compared to my receiver which is am using as a Pre/Pro.

I definately recommend it.
