Tough Room only 1 Sub: VTF-3 MK2 or EP500?

Hi Guys,

Please look at the 2 pics to see my room situation. I have the beautiful Swan Diva 6.1 speakers in rosewood. Close-up pics of the Hsu VTF-3 look like a nice cosmetic match! But is the bass there for my size room. I read all the + posts about Axiom EP500. (Craigsub tells me go with EP500 and don't look back!)

My family room appears to be a tough cookie to fill with bass! The room is 18' x16' with x 12' ceiling. So that's 3456 cu ft. for the room. Make things worse, I have open air on both sides leading into the kitchen and dining room. I guess that's another 2-3,000 cu ft off in the distance....The wife will only allow 1 sub located at the location shown in the attached pic.

I don't need, "break the house down ref-level" bass, but the bass needs to be strong in that room! Can the Hsu get me there! I don't want to fall short and need a 2nd one!

The sub cannot be too picky on location, as shown in pic I have only front corner as choice (WAF)

Some you guys own or have heard one or the other, some of you hopefully have heard both of them....

Ayn thoughts either way would be appreciated....

Thanks Vince

That's a good pair from which to choose. However, I'd recommend looking into a more even price match...which may not prove so even, performance-wise...the VTF-HO. The only problem...we have no factory published specs/test results, yet (at least that I've seen). But it promises to be a smashing performer.

I have 3000 cubes plus one side is open to the kitchen area with 10 foot ceilings..

I have a EP500 and it works really well.. though I feel pretty good about having the ability to trade it in later to an EP600 if I want :)

rjbudz,

The HO unit probably won't get past Princess.

I will give up the pretty rosewood finish only if the VTF-3 MK2 falls short.....

Any VTF-3 MK 2 owners out there driving a room my size?

Thanks Vince

Hi Vince,

I have a larger room (7000 cu ft) and bought a VTF-3MKII. It is a very nice subwoofer but it could not get to where I wanted it to SPL wise. With the Turbo it might. I now have a single EP-600 and love it. The 500 is purportedly very close in output and if that is the case I'd say go for it.

Hidog1,

In your room what were your bass needs; ref level or "crack the walls" level bass or just good solid bass in the room.

Basically, was the VTF-3 lost in there...or it was good bass and you wanted insane bass??

Thanks Vince

Vince,

I have the STF-3 in my 4500 cu. ft. room. It provides nice, tight bass, with more than enough spl's. My gain knob is currently set at a value of 2 (0-10 scale)! The VTF-3 has enough bass for your room, easily.

Vince,

I'm not into crack the walls bass (paid too much for em;) ). I need a sub that can handle War of the Worlds bass giving me most if not all that film has to offer and yet works well with music. The HSU was close but I wanted a bit more and my large space required it. Many would say I'm under-subbed now with the EP-600 but it works for me. Honestly, I'm sure either of these subs would make you happy.

Thanks for all the comments guys....

It's tough to make a sub decision, I live in Orlando, people at work tell you go over to Best Buy get a sub! They don't have a clue!! I have no sub in my system now, so I know, stepping up to EP500 or VTF-3 will be some jump!

You read Axiom sub owner comments, over at their website, and the review here, EP500 is a scary little monster! The VTF-3 comments are very + too. I'm just trying to scale the commnets when a guy says the VTF-3 is not enough bass, if he is bass fanatic, any normal human would say "holy crap"

The VTF-3 in rosewood looks real pretty, will match my Swan speakers, if I have to turn the gain to "6", to get solid basss I'm happy.
