Can someone explainn the following to me? I bought a pair of RBH tower speakers, so I went to a local audio store to look at a receiver and amps. The salesman showed me a $1500 receiver and a $4500 tube amp. The system sounded great, but it had no volume. I am looking for a system to play loud rock music. My 10-year old Sony stereo with a pair of bookshelf speakers blew this system away as far as volume. His sounded better, but we coukd talk in our normal voices and hear each other fine from 5 feet away when the system was cranked up. I cant see paying $7000+ for a system with such little volume. What do I need to push the RBH speakers to rattle my windows? Thanks

100 watts????

There are too many variables for a true answer. A 200 buck AVR for a pre-amp with a 300 buck Behringer EP2500 for power would power about any speaker in the world to ear bleeding, tweeter popping levels.

addition info to totally confused thread above

The receiver he showed me was 100W and the amp was 350Watts. Thats why I couldnt understand the low volume level when cranked up

It wasn't cranked up. We have no idea of how he had this calibrated and set up. If he had it correctly and assuming the room wasn't the size of an airplane hanger, it would be ungodly loud with 350 watts of real power.

What series of RBH do you have or were you listening to?

Is it 350W per channel? That is a lot of power for a tube amp and it only costs $4,500? What make is it? Sorry for asking so many questions.

Good catch, I didn't even notice he said it was a tube.

Answer to RBH speaker

They are RBH 1044-SE Towers. Can you recommend a good AVR? I was looking at a Denon 2308CI. Also, if you had these speakers what would your set up be (pre amp and amp) for mostly listening to rock-n-roll music? Wht is your opinion of these speakers? Sorry for all the questions but it is hard to find anyone I know that is remotely knowlrdgeable about this. Thanks for your time. Cres98

I'm sorry, but I forgot what make the tube amp was.

Sensitivity is 88dB and Impedance is 4 Ohms so I would probably use an external amp to drive them. You could use a true pre/pro or just an AVR as a pre/pro. In my opinion, an AVR is just as good nowdays and you can just use a two channel amp to drive the RBH and if you ever add surrounds or a center, the AVR can drive them.

What is your budget for an amp or an AVR? Do you care what it looks like. A pro amp will out perform most AV amps and are a fraction of the cost of most amps but they are ugly. Look at the Yamaha P2500S and the Behringer EP2500 in a pro amp. Look at Rotel and Outlaw for AV amps.

If it were me, I would run a pro amp and a Denon 3808 as a pre/pro.

My budget is about $2500-3000 for the AVR and amp. I have another question. I read somewhere about "bi amping" these speakers. Does that mean amping the subs seperately from the rest of the speaker? If so, do you recommend doing that and will the amps you recommended handle this. Also do I need to increase the power of the amp if I bi amp. What is the biggest amp I can use with these speakers?Does an amp have to be specific for 4 ohm speakers, since many are 8 ohms. Thanks again

True bi-amping with external crossovers will net you some gain. Passive bi-amping using the crossovers in the speaker may gain you some headroom but not much of anything else. Everyone has a different opinion on this and there are a thousand threads about it on here. Just do a search and you will find them.

You need an amp or AVR that is 4ohm stable. Some AVRs are 4ohm stable, you could always start with a beefy AVR and the add an amp later if ther AVR will not truely power your speakers.

For an all out, true pre/pro, look at the Integra DTC 9.8 (~ $1600) and either use a pro amp or a HT amp as described in earlier post.

Like I said before, today's AVRs make awesome pre/pros and you can go that route too. Look at Pioneer Elites (the ICE amp models will likely be 4 ohm stable and may not need an amp) Denon and Yamaha.

Many forum members also like to use Emotiva amps. They are inexpensive and very powerful so you may want to add this to your list along with the Outlaw and Rotel.

I use two 1400.2 bridged on one of my sytems to drive 2 isobarik 15" subs 1400 watts 4 ohms. 825 watts per channel 8 ohm load. These will take care of your needs for sure and you don't have to worrie about upgrading. If you spend more now you'll save money in the long run. Go for it..

I bet it was a 35W tube amp, not a 350W tube amp.
