Total newbie needs advice with cables.

So as the title suggests I have no idea what I’m doing with home theatre, although my technical knowledge is good in other areas. Hopefully one of you knowledgeable people can be kind enough to help me out.

My partner and I have just moved into a house which we are renovating. In the living room there is some kind of audio cable (see picture) that runs from a socket box at the TV end of the room, under the carpet alongside the carpet gripper to another socket box at the opposite end of the room.

Our new carpet is being fitted in a few days so I need to decide what to do with this cable. I did the usual google search but the wealth of information was overwhelming for the time I am currently able to put in. I am interested in setting up a good surround sound system, but realistically it’s going to be several months before I can do the necessary research that I will need to do before starting such a project, as the other reno work in the house is a greater priority.

Essentially, my questions are these….

A) What exactly is this cable and what part would it play in a home theatre setup?

B) How useful is it likely to be? Will it be invaluable when I come to install a new system or are there better options available?

C) Depending on the answer to question B, should I keep this cable, remove it, replace or add to it? I’d rather avoid lifting the carpet again once it has been fitted.

I am UK based if that makes any difference to the advice offered. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

I'd guess it's an rca type fitting from the picture and likely a cable for a subwoofer.

Seriously, I have no life.
Welcome to AH. :)

What else is in or will be with your system? Will you have a receiver by the TV or some other place? More speakers? What is at the other end of the room that the previous occupant routed to cable back there? Would you place a subwoofer where that cable comes out? If not, you probably do not need it.
Is it possible to ask the previous resident what was it used for? It is not for speakers for sure.

Yup. Off the cuff I'm guessing subwoofer cable, but wouldn't just assume. Is there a closet or cubby somewhere for audio gear where the other end of that cable might be? The other end of the room maybe?

Thanks for the replies. The cable is identical at both ends and the cable is routed through a wall socket at opposite corners of the 17ft x 10ft room. There are no closet's etc for equipment. The previous resident of the property didn't install the cable and just ignored its presence, so no help there.

I need to do a lot of research before I can even think about how I might install my own system but I am imagining it will be a 5.1 system with a receiver under the tv in a bespoke tv cabinet I will be making myself. If it is a subwoofer cable, would the back of the room be a suitable location for a subwoofer in a single subwoofer setup? I thought a subwoofer should be near to the display, but I'm basing this on pure assumption.

The RCA cable suggests the other side (speaker or audio device) is self-powered, like a subwoofer or active speaker. If you have only one such cable it would make more sense that it is indeed for a sub.
The best subwoofer location depends only on two things: Your room (and stuff in it) and b) where you sit.
This is a way to determine the best subwoofer location:
