This may be overly obvious and have already been answered but here it goes.

Is the Tosh link only for digital audio or does it pass video as well?

And if the video is not passed, I assume you would use the Tosh link in conjunction with the component video outputs to make the best possible connections?

Yes, you would use the Toslink (or coax) digital connection for audio and component cables for video.

By the way, Toslink is the name of the fragile little plastic connector on optical cables. Coax digital cables are terminated with RCA connectors. Both pass signals in S/PDIF format. Use either - they are the same in terms of audio quality.
