I trust you are aware that any page with a Toshiba Portege ad leaves spyware without ever clicking on the ad. Personally, I think that's over the top. If you need to sell advertising to run the site, that's fine. Just run advertising that doesn't automatically leave spyware on my hard drive. Thanks. Call it negative advertising. I promise never to buy a Portege.

You're probably already aware, but if you use adblock with firefox you'll never see another advertisement on the web that you don't want to see ever again.

On topic, I support your post. Spyware is a very loathed adversary of mine.

I noticed yesterday my security software was throwing up warning boxes every 20 seconds.

That's pretty lame for this site.

All I can say is Firefox with Ad block plus. No pop ups ever, and it is all free :)

Okay, I did it, again. This time I went whole hog and let it do the default browser thing. Last time I just did it for Audioholics but my problem is the same. Is bookmarks the same as favorites? How do I access the favorites I had with IE 7? Do we have any helpful tips for the Tools section? I figure asking for help right off the bat might save me an eternity of trying to figure it out on my own.

TIA,
-Alex

I hope I can help you out Alex.

Yes, bookmarks = favorites.

In Firefox, click on file on the top left corner. Choose import.

From there, the browser will prompt you step by step to import your prior settings from internet explorer.

As for tips, I recommend using the adblock plus and noscript add ons.

Those, as well as numerous other useful utilities can be found here.

You can choose as many or as little as you like, depending on how you want to use your browser. They install easily and are fairly straightforward to configure. As I said, I highly recommend both the adblock & noscript.

Having these two utilities has saved me from loading malicious code and scripts from the web numerous times, which in turn saves me from reformatting my PC because I can't stand infringing software that hijacks your browser or pulls other crap behind your back.

Any others questions please ask.

I'd like to repeat my question: what spyware does this ad install?

I fear the original poster may be misusing terms and misunderstanding what's going on with his computer.

It really doesn't matter after you take the Mozilla Pill.
Your cursor will roam freely without fear of of the underlined words.
Your Ad-Aware 2008 scans will come back nearly if not completely empty.
Your AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition scans will be like wise.
Free porn won't make your mouse freeze off.

Now eat the pill. :)

I figured out that I could access my old favorites from the tool bar on the top of the page in Control Panel.
Thanks for this final push and the help. I'm considering changing my sig and having it say:

"I may be slow but I get there." :D

Edit: The noscript thing thing won't let me play YouTube and I figured out that clicking on that little "S" in the bottom right corner of the screen gives me the option of temporarily allowing it (hitting refresh is required after that) or should I just always allow it? I have noticed that YouTube is good for giving disk clean up plenty to do.

My smilies are messed up (unuseable) and my Quick Links button is screwy. This must be a sign to give this thing a rest.

I have the Toshiba ad up showing right now and I am not receiving any warnings. I have NOD32 along with spybot teatimer. I think there might be something else wrong with the OPs PC.

I'm on IE6 and not a single popup or download warning.

At home, IE7 and same.

But I'm pretty sure my employer knows how to secure our workstations.

Just about every problem I've seen with any browser is a combination of insufficient configuration out of the box and user error.
