Toshiba Recorder and DVD R media

I am trying with no success to record a program using my Toshiba D-R4SC DVD recorder onto a blank DVD-R.

It keeps telling me it can't record. Check disk.

The manual does not provide elaboration on this. What should I be checking for? I've read the manual, but I think I may be missing a step to make it usable?

- Can the drive burn DVD-R? It may only accept DVD+R.
- Is the disc Single Layer or Dual Layer? The drive may only accept single layer.
- Is the size of the disc supported by the drive?
- Is the dvd-r truly blank? Try it in a computer dvd drive and check to make sure that the disc is truly blank and has not been finalized.

Not all blanks are perfectly compatable with all burners - just like cd-r/rw. If you are sure you have a blank disc of the size and type accepted by the burner, you may have to try a different brand. The firmware of burners contain 'write strategies' for setting the optimal burn parameters for discs it was tested with and it is possible that the burner cannot identify the disc and therefore refuses to attempt to burn it.
