Hi,

I ocassionally use my toshiba hd-a30 player.

I noticed quite a few movies started locking up.
once they lock up/freeze, there is nothing that can be done other
than turning off the unit.

I've tossed out charlie chocolate factory(bad movie anyway :),
transformers, frighteners.

I've updated to the latest firmware already. I don't know if
this is the player itself or the actual HD discs. not all my HD movies
have this problem. it sucks though to watch half way and it just
freezes.

I'm sorry man. Funny you mention this, I can't remember which title it was, but I recently fired up my HD-A35 and I think I had it lockup as well. I don't think I turned the unit off, but I can't remember.

My Pana BD30 was bought at the same time, and the thing works very well, never a single lockup (except Sunshine on ancient/original FW at end of movie). I am afraid it will keep working fine for many years to come, so that I'll never have an excuse to upgrade.

I guess I'm glad blu won. If only because the players seem to work better.

I am running an experiment right now, sort of, dunno if I'll follow thru. My BDP runs so smoothly, that I'm trying to NOT update any FW. I want to see how long I can go before any lockup.

I'm sure it's prolly a bad idea... but I'm curious! I don't think the experiment will last long, because I'm sure I'll update again in the next year... newayz...

Prior to FW version 4.0 I had problem with Bourne Ultimatum. It has been trouble free since 4.0. Have you tried clearing persistent storage yet?

I sold mine but I still have one or two discs left that nobody wanted to buy. Fortunately they are combos so I can still watch them.

I use mine for std DVD's. It saves my PS3 for the important jobs.:D
So far, no trouble with it locking up. I got the cheapo unit that went on sale for $100

Since I am up around 175 HD/DVD movies now, I use mine all the time and no problems at all,I hope it stays that way.I do however own a backup player I have three all together just to cover my butt in the future.

My XA2 works just fine, or worked the last time it was played:D

My Xa2 is still the best upconverter I own so I use it for all my std dvd's.

I have a XA-1 and A20 still new in box in storage and a A-20 and A-30 in active duty in two of my HT systems. They all work great and I still buy HD-DVD's brand new at Fry's for less than 5.00 I figure why buy movies on Bluray for 30.00 when I can get the same for 5.00. They have lossless audio and are still in HD. I have about 170 HD-DVD (and 200 Blurays) and love both players. I was amazed at all the people who dumped their players even though the upconverting feature of the HD-DVD was just as good as the Oppo (I own that also) and also plays HD-DVD's Oh well I'm enjoying the low prices and all the movies on both formats.

Sounds like if you have enough HMDI inputs you could set up a separates based HD media disc changer.:)

I have two XA2's, one that I use every week and the other that I keep as a backup for now. They work flawlessly. I'm one of the guys that is still bitter that BD won. I still like HD DVD better. I still buy HD DVD discs, also. I have a BD player too, but wish HD would have won. It's hard to find the deals on new releases since BD won. Older flicks, yeah, but not new releases. A ten dollar or so upcharge for BD is a bit steep.:(

My HD-A20 and my HD-A2 still work. My HD-A2 is my sole bedroom player, so it still gets a lot of use mainly for standard definition DVD's.

I still have nearly 200 HD DVD's, so I still watch them. (FTR, I have about 20 Blu-Ray's.)

I'm using the latest final firmware release. I tried again the other day and it played right on through the whole movie. it's hit and miss though.

I pretty much stopped buying HD's. well, I recently bought the 1st season of
BSG on amazon for $9.99. it did lock up the 1st time. 2nd time around
it played flawlessly.

it does a decent job of upconverting standard dvd's I think vs. my
samsung bdp-1400.

No problems with STD DVD's, but Transformers HD-DVD locks on the same chapter everytime. I'm on the Toshiba A-20

I missed this thread:eek:

I use my EP30 (A30 for you yanks). I also have the EP35 and the 360 drive (good for making rips).

I have a little more than 100 discs and they all play fine. You should try to clean your discs. I read about some substance that was on the surface of some discs that prevented some players from reading them.

I also have a BD player in my laptop, but it seems to have some trouble playing them. For now I'll just enjoy my HD colection with HD-DVDs. I'm going to check ebay for some titles I'm after (got to chase them).

In a couple of months I'll probably buy a cheap BD player. Or not! :D Maybe I'll wait for the TLOTR "proper" release :p
On the other hand I could use it as a upconverting DVD player. I got to save my HD-DVD players ;)

Methinks you have a bad disc. They're like $2.00 online--easily replaced.

I'm holding on, there is still some audio value left in them.

I packed up my HD-A2 long time ago, so right now, it's useless.
Two of the main reasons that I still keep it is, first it cost me very little, and second it has the Wolfson Dac, the WM 8740.

My HD-A1 is still connected in my system, but I did not use it for quite a while now. And I like this player with it's excellent Dacs for all channels (Burr-Brown PCM-1755), 4 Analog Devices Sharc DSP chips, and it only cost me $99.

Anyway, with about 250 HD DVD titles in my collection, I will still hold on to them (my players & my movies).

To wrap it up; excellent value, great audio quality and still great picture. :)
Plus of course enough HD DVD titles to play on them, and tons of CDs too.
