Hi guys,
If I decided to get Toshiba A2 or A3, but my TV only goes up to 720p (could do upscaling to 1080p), will there be a lot of difference when I watch HD DVD? or should I just go for regular DVD player (cheaper)?

It isn't a night and day difference between 480p and upscaled IMO. It does look better, but it isn't going to give you HD quality from DVD.

So even if I watch a High Def. DVD, there will still not be a lot of difference than if I watch a regular DVD that has been upscaled?

There is a significant difference btw HD-DVD and standard DVD (upscaled or not, it doesn't matter), so yes you will see a difference using an HD-DVD. What J said is that there isn't a huge difference between standard DVD when they are upscaled and when they aren't. Some improvement, but nothing like the DVD to HD-DVD difference.

A 480 dvd is upconverted to very good quality...some machines do it to 'near' hi def quality. None however, look as good as a hd disc such as hd dvd or bluray. The a2 or a3 will look spectacular on your 720 monitor as it does on mine. Even as good as some players upconvert...it will not look as good as the real deal which is mastered/recorded in hidef(720-1080) from the start.

I see...thanks for the explanation guys.

I have been running around to Wal-Mart (there is 3 near my house :)) and none of them still have the A2, I went to 2 best buys near my house and only 1 of them got 2 A3, so if I can't find anymore A2s, I'll go ahead and buy the A3.

The question needing an answer is how large your Tv screen and how far do you watch it from? Here is a graph of resolution limits more or less.

In some cases you will see the difference, but in others, you will not.

I will post some pics tonight of 300 on HD-DVD comparing it to the DVD version upconverted on my PS3 and A3 on my Panasonic plasma (768p).

A 50" at 5 ft may show the actual pixels, not good.
Yes, you would need all the resolution you can buy for that size and distance.
