Ok so I began my home audio upgrade, I just ordered and cant wait for emp e55ti towers,e56ci center and e55wi surrounds. I currently have an older onkyo 6.1 avr that does not have hdmi connections and I have a velodyne cht-8 and also the onkyo 10" sub that came with my onkyo htib. I am now trying to decide what my next upgrade will be my avr or sub/subs. I can not afford to do it all at once so just trying to decide whats next?

Hi. What's your available budget for your next upgrade, and how important are HDMI connections to you?

Not having HDMI probably means not having newer versions of Dolby, etc. I would say your AVR would be your next upgrade.

I do not want to do things twice at this point so that being said I am gonna save some more to get the next thing avr/sub. I dont want to just buy something cheap for now and spend more again later. I was thinking of a denon x4000 for an avr and not positive on sub yet but something that will work well in a large space.

Sounds like you have your priorities in the correct order. You might want to compare features, power & I/O count on the Denon with a comparable Yamaha/Marantz/Pioneer/NAD AVR for sh$ts and giggles. If you're gonna keep it that long, make sure she's ;) the one. Stay away from refurbished Denon's; go for a new or trusted seller. For a sub, SVS has a nice range of models. Happy Hunting!

On the sub my choices may be somewhat limited on finish, my wife would prefer a high gloss finish she does not like the low gloss black woodgrain finish on the current onkyo sub, nor the flat texture finish on the velodyne.....

What finish are the EMP towers and center? EMP offers their subs in both the red burl and black. The EMP ES10i would be a perfect match at $199.00.

I had considered the 1010i when I had ordered the rest of my speaker package from emp but if you look on the audioholics subwoofer review chart I dont think that sub will be enough for the room I have now. I had an apartment with a small living room before and now have a house with a large living room about 4000 cu ft open to more area. My current subs are lost in my room so I need something a bit more than I think the emp subs can deliver.

I'd probably go with the receiver for convenience. If you were a basshead you'd already have a great sub. Go for HDMI.
