My first active sub (many moons ago) was a Klipsch 10", 75 w. I bought another as my second sub not long after (same model and 75w). Afraid I beat the poor things up badly listening to movie sound tracks. Now every hardcore explosion in a movie causes scary pops and cracks and I can't raise the subs level much above 20%, or x-over much above 50 Hz (although music doesn't seem to bother them much). I have them wired in series, before my mains, so the subs can take the low frequency load off my Altec-Lansing main towers.
Last year I bought a Pioneer Elite VSX-54TX and an SVS PC plus sub to go with my Axiom QS-8 surrounds and #150 center. I have built many acoustical panels to help compensate for my small room (14'6 x 11'6 x 7'6). I am getting ready to finish the system this winter and my "very" weak-link is the damaged subs. I want to be shook a fair amount while watching movies, but most enjoy listening to SACD music (I do "SO" enjoy the SACD multi-channel remix of "Dark Side of the Moon" :-DD)
NOW THE QUESTION I PONDER??? I have four choices:
1 - Have the subs repaired and keep them wired in line, to support the bass performance of my mains (hoping I don't hurt them again).
2 - Refurbish the subs with new amps and drivers to improve their performance. (guessing 125 to 175 w RMS with appropriate drivers).
3 - Buy a decent 2 channel stand-alone amp, gut the electronics from the Klipsch (to increase volume in the enclosure), and add new audiophile/reference sub drivers.
4 - Replace the Klipsch with either 2 new active subs, or something like the 2-channel amp and matched passive subwoofers I saw online yesterday ($1000).
Wish I had the bucks so I didn't have to try to figure out the most savvy way to improve my system. Can't live with the damaged subs and hate to throw them away. Want to fairly well match the performance of the other mid-line componants I've got. A $1000 upgrade would be no problem but $2000 would really hurt my plans to fix up my house - finishing the HT room "and" new subs wasn't budgeted in my winter remodel plans.
I don't have the experience to judge if refurbishing the Klipsch subs is a good idea, or even possible. They were the bottom of the Klipsch line and I'm worried I would be wasting my money to upgrade them because the pro engineering would be lacking.
Hope a few people could give me some insight into my ideas - fair or folly???
