I want to upgrade my system for better sounding theater movies, dvd, music, etc. More emphasis on TV and Movies than on music but I like to play my music load and feel the instruments. WHat type of speaker setup should I go with. I have an older (4-5 yrs) Yamaha r-v1103 receiver that I will be using for now and a brand new Sony Wega KV-32hs420 tv. SHould I go with ahome theater system or customize the speaker setup. Can't go too crazy on price, probably around $500. What does everyone recommend?

Thanks
Jason

Start out with Cerwin Vega towers with large woofers for your musical tastes. Then when you save enough money, buy the center and surround speakers for home theater. Finally, you can upgrade to a better HT receiver. I think you'd be best suited towards some large, efficient front towers.

$500 isn't alot of scratch in the HT game. If you like your receiver, and its a surround-sound receiver (I'm not familiar with your particular model) you don't need to update that yet. There are members here with systems that have components with ages measured in decades!

So you'll want your money to go towards speakers, and for $500 you have a limited (but growing) market of manufacturer direct companies to deal with. Canyon recently had a system reviewed here, and you could also look into Fluance and Home Theater Direct.
