To Get a New DVD Player or Not...that is the Question.

Hi everyone,

I just "finished" my HT project (took 4 years!) and now I'm wondering if I should upgrade my DVD player or if it would just be a waste of money. I bought it a couple of years ago. I'm pretty pleased with the picture and I love the fact that it is a 5 dvd changer. I'm just wanting to know if the picture and sound quality would be noticably better with a new player. BTW, my player is a yamaha DV-C6480. Any input is appreciated.

In 2002, I upgraded from a 1998 Philips interlaced DVD player to a 2002 progressive scan Sony NSV-755 DVD/SACD player. The improvement in the video was dramatic. Both players listed for about $250.00. Your results may vary.

My DVD player already has progressive scan, and DVD-A. Its only two years old. The whole setup is: Paradigm monitor Speakers, RXV-2500 rcvr, Dish Network HDTV box, and an RCA HDTV. I want to get the best picture and sound I can on a budget. Also, I just found out that my DVD player is now part of yamaha's new HTIB :( that is really depressing and is making me think that it might be time for an upgrade!

Here is what I did.

I had a 500$ DVD player that I purchased in 1999. No Progressive scan, no upconversion, it did not even read dvd-r's.

I was looking for a better DVD, and was seriously considering the Samsung HD 941, and, while it was a good dvd player, (esp for the price and features) I decided to wait for something better, around the same price.

At the same time, I purchased a Sanyo DVD recorder, with Progressive Scan.

I found the DVD recorder to have a better picture, and also Prog Scan, so while I am waiting for that "perfect 300.00 universal DVD player" to come along, I am enjoying a better picture with my 17900 Sanyo recorder.

I would say wait, unless you are really dis-satisfied with your current dvd player.
