Do you have an HDTV? If so you will want the HD Tivo box. It accepts two CableCards and could completely eliminate your current cable box. The guide information comes from Tivo and you must pay a monthly fee on top of your cable service.

The cheaper alternative would but to get the standard dual tuner Tivo box and tie it in with your cable box but that has very limited functionality.

You ask your cable company for a CableCard. CableCard is a universal device that was supposed to replace cable boxes. Many TV's made up untill about last years models had CableCard slots but the fact that they had only one way communication didn't allow for a real program guide or on demand services and thus they didn't take off. Tivo eliminates those problems by using their own guide service. The CableCard allows you to get all yor digital cable channels through the Tivo. Without it you would only get basic cable (2 through 70 something). You would need two CableCards in order to record two shows at once.

Niether Dish Network or DirecTV have Tivo. DirecTV did until a while back but they now use their own DVR.
