Tired of using BD player for audio cds...

I currently use my BD60 to play audio cds, but it has such a long start up time.. its kind of a pain... Ive actually been wanting to get a decent quality cd player for a while... I think it is time...

I would like a Audio cd player that will handle SACDs, although i dont currently own any, they have always interested me. Ive just never had the hardware for playback. It would also be nice if it would also play DVD-A...

That leads me to think an used Oppo dvd player might fit the bill nicely...

but maybe there is something better out there I am over looking?

My budget is low.. I dont have a number... If the price is justifiable best describes my budget... but I do know I would have a hard time coughing up more than $250...

Why not skip a technological generation and go directly to computer playback? The Squeezebox touch will sound great in your music system, fit your budget, and playback hi res files . . . .

I think if I were to go the digital route... I would get AppleTV or Airport Express and stream my iTunes...

I would rather stay with tangible media... :)

I also was thinking dvd only players have got to be dinosaurs by now... maybe I could pick up a once $$$$ machine for $$

A used Oppo 980 should fit your requirements and budget.

I own and enjoy two, their start up time for CDs is negligible.

I too got tired of DVD players and OSD's just to play a CD. So I went to my junk room and pulled my old JVC XL-Z431.

Hooked it up optically and I am much happier now.:)

I don't own any SACD's and only a few DVD-A's and I don't have any plans on getting any...I'll buy Blu-ray and play them in the PS3.

How about this 981 listed in our very own classifieds?
I first went to Oppo site and No Stock see Amazon. And Amazon was out of stock as I was looking for a retail or price for a new one. As this used one in the add here does not have a price, make offer.

I went to Amazon reading reviews on this unit. There were a lot of unit failures on the 981. Some were at first but most posted Great while it lasted... 2 years. I was suprised as Oppo has some Great units but this was Not a Bluray but it does decode SACD etc. Shame it was not a Bluray I would have tried it.

I very much like my Yamaha DVD-S1800. Picked it up about a year ago on Amazon for under $80 brand new. It's a $200+ unit normally and sounds better than my Oppo BDP-93 when playing SACD's or DVD-A's, though the Oppo is going through HDMI only and the Yamaha is using analog outs.

I agree that Oppo is a good choice. The 980 and 981 have been discontinued for years though. I've owned the 970 and 980 and they are very good units. I sold my 980 when I bought my 83SE. I bought my SE so I could play audio on it instead of the CD player, and so I could take the CD player out of the system :) Another good used line to look at is Denon. I recently sold my 2900, which was a fantastic SACD and DVD-A player, for $125.

I've used the BD-60 for CDs also and though it has the slow start up, it wasn't slow to recognize discs and sounded pretty decent via analog.

The bad news about SACD is, if you don't already have a collection, now is not a good time to get into it. Since very few discs are being produced and existing ones are out of print, discs can be very expensive. The most popular discs will tend to go for a premium as well.

I have a Sony BDP360 BluRay player and although not as fast as a dedicated CD player, is quick enoulg loading the CDs that it never bothered me.

(sorry to hijack.....I was suprised to how quick the BLuRay of Tron Legacy loaded. It must have been a full minute shorter than Star Trek.. )

Yup – and regular CD players, even more so. :D

I would recommend the Denon DVD-2910.

I have one and am very happy with it, plays SD DVD's with excellent PQ, upscales 480 to 720. You can find them used for under your budget.

I use mine on a Hitachi RPTV and the SD DVD's look almost like my HD broadcast signal....not quite, but far superior to a regular DVD on a non-HD set.
