hi all,

we currently have a 2600 that we preout into bryston amps (300*5) to power b&w speakers in a 5.1 setup.

the 2600 is great but we now have an opportunity to sell it and get something else if we choose. 70% of our listening is HT. given that we dont really utilise the amp in the 2600, should we be looking at something else - a dedicated av preamp perhaps?

ideally, we need hdmi (we just feel that hdmi is an important future proof feature and so convenient). the av functions of the 2600 is awesome but perhaps there is something out there that will give us equally good stereo performance?

what does everyone think? is there something coming out in the next few weeks that we should be waiting for?

cheers,

julie

changing already!?

for HT, you'd be hard pressed to find a better performer than the 2600 (even if you throw away the amps inside, it'd still be a bargain)

are you using the pure direct mode on the yammy for 2 ch listening?

i haven't been.

is there a by pass pass mode on the 2600 that allows one to go out to a dedicated 2 channel preamp for stereo listening?

not to a dedicated pre-amp, but directly to the amp. (i.e. the 2600 doesn't do any processing it just passes all the data from the player to the amp, in this case your Brystons)

its the button to right of the display and above the volume control.
button #16 on the owner's manual (I think it lights up blue)

page 42 of the manual ... but you have to have an analog connection between the player and receiver

there is also the "straight effect" button on your remote or inside the hideable panel on the front of the receiver. page 43

It doesn't do any processing but the pre-amp section of the 2600 is still in use.

If you want to get a high quality pre-pro to match with your Bryston amp and B&W speakers (assuming they are the 700 or 800 series), you may consider something like a Bryston SP2, or Anthem equivalent. The Bryston don't have video switching so it can't get outdated, it does not have any to begin with.

Other than the lack of video switching, the SP2 has a plug in ROM chip to make it future proof to some extent.

I find myself wondering what you hope to gain by replacing the 2600. I don't think the 2600 is lacking in stereo capability and you would be hard pressed to improve on it.

First, you need a buddy that would take this cheap, crappy equipment :p, so that you can buy more AV equipment.:D
