Time to change: Yamaha DSP Ax1 for __??

Hiya,

Newbie in the forum.

Well, all this digital HDMI, DPLII, DTSNEO, DDEX, etc, etc has caught up with my venerable Yamaha DSP AX1. The time has come to upgrade but.. upgrade to what?!?!?

I bought my DSP AX1 when I was single, no mortage, no nothing, just me myself and I.

Now times demand a tighther budget. I'd love to go for the RX-Z9 but I'd have to put a mortage for my wife... not such a good idea.

Sooo, with all this in mind, and a 2000-2500 (MAAAX) budget in mind, what do you guys suggest is the best alternative out there for receivers? I use it mainly for movies, music comes second as I dont have the privilege to spend all that time at home.

I´ve looked at the Yamahas rx2700, rx 4600 and some Denons...

I also plan to upgrade my plasma to HDMI (although mine has DVI).

My other equiment includes
- Yamaha DVD S2300
- Definitive Bipolar Tower Speakers
- Twin Definitive 12" subs
- Rear Definitive Procinema
- Central Definitve Speaker
- Surround Bipolar BP2 Speakers

Welcome Jose, nice setup. Which towers do you have and how big is your space? If I were you and were willing to wait till next year, I would. Hopefully by then, the new HDMI 1.3 standard will be more widely implemented in more gear. If you can’t wait, then I’d buy a less expensive unit with features you like to hold you over a couple of years until the technology advancements hopefully stabilize a little.

I went from a yamaha DSP-A3090 to a Denon 3805 and LOVE it. I have similar setup - Def Tech BP2002, CLR 2002, and BPX for surrounds.

The new HDMI 1.3 standard looks great! Will there be a way to upgrade amps' firmware?

Also, I may be narrowing down my choices to the Yamaha 2700 or the Denon 4306.

As for HD TV, Im still waiting to get a decent 1080p to arrive to Mexico, at a decent price!
How would my DSP AX1 compare to the two mentioned recievers?
