I'm well over due for a 2 channel stereo. Even though I have paid attention to my A/V setups, I'm really spending more time on my own listening to music away from the family. I dusted off my Yamaha avr595a and Klipsch SB2's. My only source (currently) is a mac mini run through a schiit modi 3+. The sound is nice, imaging is ok, and it's clean. I know I can do better with the goal being a more spacious and tonal accuracy. I listen to a lot of jazz, and high res live recordings. I think I have the new list of wants. Audiolab 6000a or Cambridge Cxa61 with Martin Logan 35xti or Bowers & Wilkins 607s. I like the Dynaudio evoke 10s but they are bit out of my price range.

The real question is if I upgrade one peice of equipment at a time should I do the amp or speakers first do get the most impact right off the bat?

There's no doubt about it you will find upgrading speakers will yield the most discernable improvement in your listening pleasure. Electronics might be needed simultaneously if the speakers you up grade to are inefficient, as well as rated at 4 ohms requiring amplification capabilities beyond your current amplification's specifications.

No reason not to have good two channel audio from your theater/ht/multich setup, too.

If I were to go for a bookshelf sized speaker these days, assuming a smaller room. I would go for the JBL Studio 530 when they go on sale. Waveguides tend to be pretty forgiving of space and JBL just somehow manages to afford to get good performance out of even their budget line.

If the room would allow it, I would opt for 2.1 instead of trad 2 channel. I do both but my 2 speaker only systems tend to involve larger speakers, or 3-ways that will go down to at least 35hz for the music I listen to. On my smaller speakers, subs really fill in the bottom nicely. Right now I am listening to a DIY speaker designed in essence of the LS3/5a, but along with two 12" subs, and it is a marvelous thing.

Otherwise, even in a small room, smallest woofer I would even consider for 2 speakers only, cannot have a woofer smaller than 6.5", and preferably 8". I mostly listen to jazz these days. The subwoofer, provided it can translate also the more melodic, upper sub bass notes as well as the lower frequencies, really fits well in jazz. From the standards that utilize the double bass, to the modern fusion version of bass effects as well. 5" or less woofers that do mid 40s hz and above, will need a sub, IMO.

Some people don't want to use the room their H/T systems are in.
while I get that I agree with Lovin that there's no reason why an HT setup shouldn't sound at least 'good' for two channel music.

Im not contesting that at all. I'm just saying some people like to set up a separate system in a different environment a different atmosphere.

Altho the OP did say he wanted to go do this away from the family. Speakers would of course be the better investment over electronics for good quality audio like what he's asking about.
