Hi all
I've been hanging around for a while and it's obvious that most of you are very knowledgeable. I have been running old ads 400's with a sub in a 2 channel system for about 20 yrs. I finally bought a 7.1 Onkyo 805 and now I have the fever BAD! I want new tower speakers and will move my ads to surrounds. I know sound is in the eye or um ear of the beholder, but I'd appreciate any advice you would give before I go out. I need to stay under $1000. I want to compare Paradigm M7, Monitor Audio BR6, B+W 603 S3, and Wharfedale 9.5 0r 9.6. What do you think of these? I heard axiom 60's that I liked. I play mostly rock and jazz, some r&b and classical. 70% music 30% TV. THANKS

Welcome griffinconst,

Take your favorite music that you are very familiar with at the moment. listen to as many speakers as you can and take notes. (Yes take notes. if you're like me you'll mash half the info up in your brain and forget the other half...:)) Then if there is a speaker that really stands out to you see if the dealer will let you do an in home trial without having to pay a restocking fee. (very rare) also come back here with your findings and the members here can give you suggestions of internet direct only brands that sound similar to what you liked in the store. The internet direct companies usually have very good return policies so look into that also.

Let us know what you find and have fun!

Someone on this forum recommended Axiom to me. I have been doing a lot of reading on different speakers and am about to give Axiom a 30 day trial.

Heck if its a 30 free trial go for it. You may like them and that would be great. While you have the Axioms, try bringing home other speakers if you can from other dealers to do a compare to the Axioms.

Others to consider in your price range are the PSB Image series towers which offer a great bank for your buck performance. I own a pair of T45s and they do music extremely well. I have a London recording on vinyl of Tchaikovsky 1812 overture and blows me away at how good they sound when playing this piece.

Good luck and let us know bow you make out. :)

I just picked up some Deftech BP-10s, which were used, and I couldn't be happier. I have liked all of their towers that I have heard. A friend of mine has some BP-2000s with the powered sub and they sound great.

instead of the bronze series from Monitor check out the silver, its much better. You can find RS6's for like $700-$749. Heck i have even seen some RS8's under $1000 lately. My buddy runs an all Monitor HT setup from the silver line and it sounds fantastic with music and movies.

If you like a more lively speaker then the Axioms should fit the bill. I just think the vinyl looks cheap on them, and wood veneer finishes on them cost an arm and a leg lol.

If its mainly for music i think your best bet is with the Monitors though. They are an all around great speaker.
