Great opportunity, mom is moving to an assisted living facility , and my 46" Samsung would work great in her new digs...

Sitting in long narrow room, about 18' away. TV above fireplace, so we look up slightly at the TV, center about 6-1/2 feet above the floor. Heat has not been an issue, even on the wall surface.

I'd like to keep it under $2k, but if I really needed to jump in price, might find a way to swing it. Has 3D advanced to the point making it worthwhile? Is there enough advantage to upgrade from my current, or should I just buy her a lesser unit and wait?

Decent units will come with 3D already onboard. My plasma has 3D, but I didn't want to pop the $100+ for each pair of glasses. So we don't use the 3D feature.

You can find really good sets for less than $2k. Especially with the deals to get rid of last years models.

Good luck!

same case here: my new TV does 3D too, but I have no desire to buy a) New receiver (at-least a grand) b) blu-ray player - about $150 c) at-least a pair of 3d glasses - another $150
total: additional $1300 just to suffer thru mediocre "3d" - no thanks
