Seriously, I have no life.
Since we have a number of sci-fi junkies here;) has anyone else bought and viewed this in HD yet? I have some question about picture and sound.

Oh gosh... I edited Dialogue on that film (as a Dialogue Assistant). I think I can still recite every line by heart...

I haven't bought/heard the HD version, but aside from the obvious question of "Why did they bother" - what do you want to know?

I rented the HD one, and was not real impressed with the PQ compared to the normal HD 3-D look..
However, to double check, I broke out my DVD version, and yes there is a obviously better (as with 98% of HDM) quality.

There is still a noticable amount of grain, slightly soft in areas (which kills 3d look), but the coloring on the HD DVD was a huge improvement over the DVD.
Contrast as well was only slightly improved upon.
Sound quality was ever so slightly improved, but the sound from the start was not up to par, so not much to work with.
The surrounds will by no means get a work out, actually they barely moved, and only did slightly in the time warp scenes.
LFE is about non-existent.

I saw Peter Bracke's review, and really thought he was being VERY generous.
Granted compared to his other reviews, was about par for this movie.

Being a fan of the movie, I will buy it, but will wait for it on a BOGO sale.

So unless you are a huge fan, I would say rent it or wait for a almost giveaway price.

Time Cop - now there is a movie that I don't intend to ever really watch again and I can't see for the life of my why they would put it out on any HD format...

^above post is clearly a personal opinion.
IMO, it was one of Jean's better movies.

Also IMO, for the life of me, I don't know why they would bother putting some of the crappy anime movies on HDM.

Yes it was one of his better movies, but that isn't saying a whole lot. It was sort of down hill from there.... I liked Bloodsport.

There's a far bigger audience for Anime than there is for Van Damme movies :) Seriously. That is not to say that I have a need to have all anime on high def either though.

I disagree, there is a bigger following for 80s/90s movies(cheesy or not), then there is for cheesy kid anime.
Granted one of the only anime movie I would even consider buying is Spirited Away (and would only buy it in HD, in a 4.99 bin)
All others don't deserve a HD transfer, IMO, and are perfectly fine on DVD.
Granted I will have to check the sale rate for people who have HD players, and the sale of anime.

There is a scene in there with a... um, "VR" girl and in standard definition on a 27-inch monitor we could see... um... surgical evidence of a very badly done "procedure"... In HD it should be downright nasty. I have so many memories of that film, but most of them are "you had to be there at 2am" to understand.

My question is not about the dialogue but:
The LFE level when the house explodes is blah. As stated the time warping scenes are pretty good though.
And, in the scene where he time travels to correct his wife's death, he is in the mall and some of the colors are just awful looking pink or something in a couple of shots.
Is this how it is on film? Only on HD?

Since you saw the HD, perhaps you can comment on the mall scene when he is back in time to correct his wife's death, did you notice some funny colors in the backgrounds on some closeups, kind of pinkish or ugly reds, in a couple of those scenes? Something didn't look right.
The house explosion was nothing:eek: Same with you?

So your original question was not, if it was good.
But rather checking others perception of what is good?
Since you have seen the HD version?

To answer your above question, the mall scene I did notice slightly pushed reds (but nothing pink).
Granted this was not only when he went back in time, but as well, also in the start (before he became agent Walker).

If you are speaking of sound, with the house scene.
As I stated before, the only scenes that even moved the surrounds was the time warps.
LFE, is clearly non-existent, as I have pointed out, so for others that have not seen this = DO NOT BUY, thinking it will have great sound.;)

But if you are a Sci-Fi fan (like myself) then just pick it up, on sale. :)

Can't help you on the colors, but the explosion was done in a way that simply added sweeteners for the re-recording engineers to add in as they pleased. We never set up dedicated LFE tracks per se, since when composing the effects tracks you aren't mixing or anywhere near a 5.1 format. We ended up simulating discrete surrounds etc. IIRC there wasn't a single subwoofer in the entire studio and our speakers didn't go much below 30Hz.

All that is to say that I'm not certain there was EVER any serious LFE sent to the mixers, though even a 30-40 Hz sweetener should give a nice thump... We had a file named 6BOOM207 (old Synclavier naming system that carried over) that was pretty thick and ended up in just about everything. Wish I had that file now and could hear what it really was on a true sub...

This one statement suggests that you don't know much about anime then, as most of it is definitely not for kids. I am not talking about Pokemon and Sailor Moon here... The Japanese tend to deal with far more serious themes than your average Disney, and some of the stuff is quite well done. Hayao Miyazaki's films are all very good, but they are still kid oriented for the most part (his earlier stuff somewhat less so). There isn't a whole lot on HD right now because it IS a niche and doesn't sell as well as blockbuster movies, but I think you would be mistaken about the following that anime has.

Your opinion and one that doesn't seem to be based in any kind of real experience. Try watching Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Ninja Scroll or Jin-Roh.

I'm sure Time Cop is HIGHLY rated and sought after by collectors

Sorry for the delayed response, weather problems:eek:
Thanks for confirming this again. I need to re-check that first mall scene as that didn't strike me as having color issues, but it may have been there and missed it. The second scene had real problems for me.

Thanks. That explains it. I was hoping that on this re-release they would bring it up to date on what is expected from sound and effects:D
